What Are Same-Day Crowns?
Same-day crowns are restorations made by a CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) machine. CEREC uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology to make crowns and other restorations right in the dentist’s office while the patient waits. The system includes a camera, a computer, and a milling machine.
The dentist will take pictures of the patient’s tooth and use the computer to design a crown that will look like the patient’s natural teeth. They will use the milling machine to carve the crown and then fit it over the patient’s tooth. When the dentist is satisfied with the fit, they will use a special cement to bond it to the tooth.
What Are Some of the Advantages of Same-Day Crowns?
Crowns made by CEREC can last longer than crowns made by conventional dental labs.
Using CEREC also reduces the number of times the patient has to visit the dentist to undergo treatment. A patient who undergoes a root canal, for example, usually needs a crown to strengthen their tooth. If they get the crown from a dental lab, they have to wait a couple of weeks and then return to the dentist. When they get the crown through CEREC, they can have everything done in one visit.
Getting same-day crowns also means that the patient doesn’t have to get a temporary crown that may or may not last until the next appointment.
